What is the Amazon fire tv stick?

The Amazon Fire Tv stick is an HDMI stick which will turn your television into a comprehensive multimedia station.

I know that these days when you purchase a flat screen tv, it always comes with apps like Netflix and Youtube and some models offer even more online streaming content, but that’s about it.

The Amazon Fire tv changes all of that. Not only will it allow you to watch your favorite tv stations, it will also allow you to use it as your security system, music player, etc.

If you have Alexa devices in your home already, you can use the remote that comes with the Amazon fire tv to control everything inside of your home.

You can turn on your smart thermostat, dim your lights to create a romantic atmosphere or even call your BFF’s.

How does the Amazon fire tv stick work?

The Amazon Fire tv comes in 2 versions.

There’s the Amazon Fire tv Stick, which basically works on every flat screen tv with an available HDMI port. It will offer you almost all of the features that you can ever wish for, but it doesn’t support watching in 4K.

The second version is called the Amazon Fire tv Ultra 4K. This is a small square box that you can plug into a free HDMI port on your tv. But you do need to have a 4K television if you want to get the most out of it.

But the 4K element is basically the only upgrade that you will get when you buy the Amazon Fire tv ultra 4K.

How does it work? Well, you simply plug it into your tv, plug the power cord into your wall socket, connect it with your wifi connection and once it’s connected you’re ready to enjoy lots of movies, tv-shows or tv channels that comes with it.

About the wifi connection. When you’re going to use the Amazon Fire tv ultra 4K version, I would highly recommend using the ethernet connection module that you can purchase separately. Otherwise, there’s a big chance that the 4K video won’t come out as they should.

So a strong and steady internet connection is recommended.

Whatever version you will buy, both come with the Alexa Voice remote that will allow you to control your tv with the voice commands. And not just your tv. If you’re using other Alexa devices like for example security cameras, you can view the cameras on your tv by telling Alexa to show the cameras.

Because it’s completely wireless and you don’t need to connect it to your cable tv account, you can also take it with you on a holiday. As long as you’re having an HDTV to your exposal, you can simply connect it to the tv and you can continue to watch the latest episode of House of Cards or the Blacklist. (Hint: the blacklist is one of my favorite tv-shows).

What Amazon fire tv stick channels and apps are there available?

I know your smart television already come with a few apps, but the main reason why you should definitely buy the Amazon Fire tv is that of the tons of channels and apps that are available for this device.

The default channels that come with the Amazon Fire tv stick are:

  • Netflix
  • Crackle
  • HBO Now
  • Watch ESPN
  • Watch HGTV
  • CBS AllAccess
  • Watch Food Network
  • BBC News
  • Hulu
  • Disney Junior
  • MLB TV Premium
  • Showtime
  • Hulu Plus
  • A&E
  • Youtube
  • Vimeo
  • IHeart Radio
  • Spotify
  • History Channel
  • NBA Game Time
  • PBS Kids
  • Bloomberg Tv
  • Huff Post Live
  • Amazon Prime Video

This is just a small list of what you can watch.

BE ADVISED: The Amazon Prime Video app is the only channel that is pre-installed on your Amazon Fire Tv stick, but you can add all of the other channels on the go. So if you don’t watch a certain channel, you can leave it out and that way only have the channels at your fingertips that you actually watch.

The Amazon Fire tv stick also comes with tons of additional apps and even video games.

I would recommend ordering the Amazon Fire tv stick Game controller. Without a game controller, most games won’t really work.

Also be advised that for some channels like Netflix, you do need a Netflix account.

A great additional app that I would recommend you to install on your Fire stick is Kodi. This is a 3rd party app that has a lot of additional movies and tv-shows that you can watch.

so in the next section, I will explain how to install Kodi on amazon fire stick.

how to install Kodi on the Amazon fire stick

Kodi is not an official app that you can install from the Amazon Fire tv stick app store, so in order to install it, you will need a 3rd party installer.

There’s a 3rd party app called Downloader that you will need to install apps that are not originally supported by the Fire stick. You can find it in 2 ways, by manually typing it in or if you’re using the Alexa voice remote, by holding down the microphone button and speak out loud: “Downloader.” So let’s get to it, shall we?

Step 1: start up your Amazon Fire tv stick and once your home feed is displayed, use your Alexa voice controller that comes with the tv stick to get the downloader app to show up.

If you don’t use the voice controller, press the up-button to go to the categories section and on the left, you will find the general search box. Type in Downloader here and let it search for it.

The downloader app we’re looking for here has an all orange background and is simply called Downloader. It should be the first search result that pops up.

Now press it and choose to install the app.

Step 2: Now we’re going to set up your Amazon Fire tv stick to being able to install unofficial Amazon apps.

In your home screen, press the up button and on your right, you will find the settings button. Press this and choose Device and next Developer options. Here you will find the option called: “Apps from unknown sources.” You will need to turn this to On. This will allow you to install apps that are not connected to the Amazon app store itself.

Disclaimer: By downloading 3rd party apps, the risk will be on you. So be advised that when you install for example Android apps and they have a virus inside them, it can hurt your device.

Step 3: Open up the Downloader app by navigating to the app you just installed. If you have a hard time finding it, simply press and hold the Home button on your remote for 2 seconds and a list of your installed apps will pop up. Then press the Downloader app.

Step 4: Install the Kodi app. When you’ve opened up Downloader, at the top you will find a box where you can type in an URL. Here you will type in: “https://kodi.tv/download” and press enter.

Now you will see a list with a platform to install Kodi on. For the Amazon Fire tv stick, we will go and select the Android version. Next, choose your android version. If you buy the Amazon Fire tv stick, it most likely will have the 64-bit version, because it’s new. So pick the ARM 64-bit version.

Now you can choose 2 different versions. The build version and the nightly version. We’re choosing the build version because it’s proven to work. The nightly version is more of a beta version which might be newer but can have more bugs inside of it.

Go to the bottom of the page and choose Install and let the Downloader app do its thing. Once it’s installed, you can delete the installer app and Kodi is installed.

That’s it, you’re all ready to go and check out all of its content. Now it’s time to head back to the home screen and launch the Kodi app and that’s it

Before you’re going to Amazon and order your Amazon Fire tv stick, it’s important to know what versions of the Amazon Fire tv stick there are available and which one will give you the best options.

There are basically 2 different versions of the Amazon Fire tv available. The Amazon fire tv stick and the Amazon Fire tv Ultra 4K.
